After our leftovers… me, chicken vegetable curry over rice… Brad pizza with crushed red peppers… I mentioned chocolate chip cookies sounded good. Knowing I wouldn’t make them. Therefore, assuming I was safe. Brad immediately agreed and said HE was going to make them. This was something I knew I could blog about! He got a few ingredients out and I snapped some pics with my phone… PS THIS JUST IN… while baking Brad agreed to going with me to best buy tomorrow to get the camera I have been
begging, kicking, screaming patiently waiting for for YEARS! (Honestly years, had the cash-o-la saved up and recently spent it on landscaping… booooo) Back to my story. Asking questions along the way Brad did this alone aside from a few bits of help from me.
B: Why is the recipe for chocolate chop cookies in this recipe book crossed out and re written? A : Because my Moms is better.
B: Is this shortening? A: Yes
B: Where is the Vanilla? A: Should be in the tuperware bin that has all the small baking things in it. (Wasn’t… got put away by a friend at my last party!)
After a small fiasco with the brown sugar
that ended up all over my floor I remembered why I usually just make cookies when he wants them. Great intentions… seems like some foreshadowing to cooking with kids?
B “wiping” the counters down
He called me in for a taste test, I may have just gone in when I heard the chocolate chips go in and the mixer stop now that I think of it. :) We tasted and came to the conclusion a few things were probably missing. For sure he missed the salt, and only put in the called for amount of vanilla. (Who ever does that?… not me!) Other than that I wasn’t watching him close enough to figure out what was wrong so… he baked it.
While waiting I did some “Pinning” , ate my cookie dough, and drank some milk. Yes, with a straw and ice.
Brad put the cookies in and set timers that went off I swear every 2 minutes until they were done. While still pinning I hear him laughing in the kitchen.
A: How are they? B: You might want to get a picture of these if your blogging about this.
Lets just say I am putting this up as an example of what happens when you make my moms chocolate chip cookie recipe INCORRECTLY :)
He’s so cute though how can I really complain? They were still good… just flat.
To attempt the cookies on your own here is the recipe which I believe comes from my Grandmas Original Betty Crocker cook book so its nothing fancy or inventive.
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Prep time: 20 min Bake time: 6 min (in Convection oven)1/3 c shortening 1/3 c margarine 1/2 c granulated sugar 1/2 c packed brown sugar 1/2 t baking soda 1 egg 1 t vanilla (I pour over so more like 2) 1 1/2 c flour 2 c or 12-ounce package of semisweet chocolate chips 1/2 t salt
Mix in mixer: shortening, margarine, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla.
Slowly add in dry ingredients. You can mix them together first then add, or one at a time. Depending upon how picky you are about your baking.
NOTE: My mom just let me know she also adds some extra flour in the end until it isn’t “sticky”
Last step, add in Chocolate Chips!
Scoop on to cookie sheet and bake 6 minutes, take out and let them cook more on on the sheet for 3 minutes. Then allow the to cool OR eat them all before they do.
I prefer to use a baking mat for almost everything that goes on this cookie sheet. Is it always called a cookie sheet? Even if your not baking cookies on it? Just a thought.
